West Hartford is a national semi-finalist in the Recipes for Healthy Kids Contest sponsored by Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” Campaign and the USDA. We are the only team from Connecticut to make it this far!
All of the recipes are posted on the Recipes for Healthy Kids website for voting at www.recipesforkidschallenge.com/submissions, until the deadline of May 15, 2011. This online voting is for the Popular Choice Award, where each town has the opportunity to win $1,500 for their schools’ nutrition services.
The West Hartford Recipe is a "Fiesta Wrap," which was the result of collaboration between Charter Oak, Bugbee and Norfeldt students with guidance from Max Downtown Executive Chef and Bugbee parent, Hunter Morton. This creative wrap features black beans, quinoa, vegetables and cheese, served with fresh salsa, and it was one of the five finalists in the Legumes category.
Hundreds of recipes from across the nation were submitted, and only 15 recipes were chosen to move forward in the competition. These schools will be visited onsite by a national judging team to help determine the three finalists that will participate in a national cook-of this summer.
